| Description | Fellowships provide support for doctoral students of outstanding potential in the applied physical, biological or engineering sciences at selected universities who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the U.S. in time of national emergency. Two fellowship options, Five-Year Hertz and Five-Year Coordinated. Renewable for up to 5 years. | |
| Award Amount | Personal stipend of $31,000 over the 9-month academic year for Option 1, Five-Year Hertz. Personal stipend of $36,000 /9 months for option 2, Five-Year Coordinated. | |

| Academic Level | Prospective/Current Graduate Student. | |
| Citizenship | Open only to U.S. citizens or permanent residents. | |
| Requirements | Open to prospective and current doctoral students who at the time of application have not yet completed one year of graduate study. If you have a master’s degree in a different field, you can apply for this fellowship as a first-year graduate student. | |
