| Description | Up to 9 fellowships are awarded annually to encourage diversity among students pursuing full-time studies toward the PhD (or D.Sc.) in the physiological sciences, and their participation in the Society. The Porter Fellowships are one-year awards, and the possibility of a second year of funding is based on trainee progress. Under exceptional circumstances, a third year may be awarded. | |

| Citizenship | Open only to U.S. citizens or permanent residents. | |
| Requirements | Must have been accepted into or currently enrolled in a graduate program. Open to underrepresented ethnic minorities (African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Native Alaskans, or Native Pacific Islanders). If faculty judges it advantageous for training, fellows may study away from the host institution during part of the tenure of the award. | |
