Graduate Summer Research Mentorship Program - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How many copies of my GSRM application do I need to submit?
     
    Submit the online application (remember to hit "Submit") and then submit the supporting documents in the order listed as a PDF file emailed to uclafellowship@grad.ucla.edu. The file name should be "student’s last name, first name UID_[name of fellowship]," e.g., "Bruin, Josie 002002003_GSRM."
     
    If we don't have your online application in our online database by the deadline, your file is not complete and will not be reviewed.
     
  2. May I submit my application before the deadline?
     
    Yes. We encourage you to submit your complete application as soon as possible.
     
  3. May I submit a Degree Progress Report or an URSA report instead of an unofficial transcript?
     
    No. You must submit an unofficial transcript. You can obtain an unofficial transcript, at no cost, from the Registrar's Office in 1113 Murphy Hall.
     
  4. I am an international student. May I apply for the GSRM Program?
     
    No. GSRM applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of application.
     
  5. I was awarded a GSRM last year. May I apply for the GSRM Program again this year?
     
    Effective Summer 2012, students may receive the GSRM a maximum of two times and in only one doctoral department/program.
     
  6. May I apply for the GSRM Program and the academic year GRM Program?
     
    If you are eligible, you may apply for both.
     
  7. Do you grant extensions to the GSRM application deadline?
     
    No extensions are granted to the GSRM application deadline.
     
  8. May my faculty mentor submit a letter of recommendation after the GSRM Program deadline?
     
    Contact your faculty mentor as soon as possible. Your complete GSRM application, including the letter of recommendation, is due on the stated deadline. Letters of recommendation cannot be submitted after the deadline.
     
  9. May GSRM awardees also work during the summer?
     
    GSRM awardees can work 25% time (10 hours per week).
     
  10. Do I include the letter of recommendation in the PDF file?
     
    No. Submit the original of both the letter of recommendation and the letter of recommendation cover form in a sealed envelope. This form should be signed by the applicant as well as by the recommender. If either or both signatures are missing, the application will be incomplete and ineligible for review.
     
  11. I am Advanced to Candidacy. May I apply for the GSRM Program?
     
    No. GSRM applicants cannot be ATC.
     
  12. I will be receiving Chancellor's Prize summer funding. May I apply for the GSRM Program?
     
    Students receiving Chancellor's Prize summer funding are not eligible for the GSRM Program.
     
  13. I have other summer funding (e.g., National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program, the Foreign Languages and Area Studies Summer Award). May I apply for the GSRM Program?
     
    No.
     
  14. Are students in the Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering & Applied Sciences eligible for the GSRM Program?
     
    No.
     
  15. Are students in Law, Dentistry and Medicine eligible for the GSRM Program?
     
    No.
     
  16. I am a graduate student at another UC campus. May I apply for the GSRM Program?
     
    The GSRM Program is for UCLA PhD students only.
     
  17. I am a graduate student at another university. May I apply for the GSRM Program?
     
    The GSRM Program is for UCLA PhD students only.
