UCLA's Graduate Division Summer Program for Undergraduate Research offers undergraduate juniors with outstanding academic potential the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors on research projects. The eight-week program is designed for students who plan to pursue the PhD degree and enter academic careers. Opportunities are available in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and professional schools. Continuation of this program in Summer 2008 is contingent upon funding availability. Each student participant will work with a faculty mentor with special expertise and interests matched, as closely as possible, to the student's research interests and career goals. Students will either assist the faculty member in an ongoing research project or work collaboratively with the mentor in designing a new project of mutual interest. A directory of UCLA faculty research interests is available online should you wish to suggest a faculty member with whom to work. Students who intend to pursue professional graduate degrees in dentistry (DDS), law (JD), management (MBA), or medicine (MD) are not eligible for this programs Applicants must
A long-term goal of this program is to help broaden and expand the pool of academically talented young scholars committed to careers in university teaching and research. All qualified students are encouraged to apply and will be considered without regard to race, ethnicity, gender or national origin. Selection of participants will be based on academic merit and availability of appropriate faculty mentors. Special consideration will be given to applicants whose socioeconomic background, access to educational opportunities and other life experiences suggest that they would especially benefit from this type of program, and who demonstrate potential to contribute to the diversity and excellence of research and teaching in higher education. Please note: Given that the faculty mentoring aspect is critical to student success in the program, if we are unable to identify a faculty mentor for a student, we will be unable to accept the student into the program. Program participants will receive a $2,400 stipend, as well as room and/or a meal allowance (half at the beginning of the program and half at the end, upon successful completion of all program requirements). All program participants (including UCLA undergraduates) are required to reside in assigned University housing. Students will be reimbursed up to $450 for round-trip travel (e.g., airfare, taxi) from home to UCLA. Students traveling within California but outside of the Los Angeles area will be reimbursed up to $200 for travel expenses (e.g., taxi, mileage). Limited parking is available at the student's expense, payable in full at the beginning of the program. For 2007, the rate was $150.00. See the UCLA SPUR Viewbook for cancellation and penalty policies. Program Components & Expectations The program features:
Participants are required to complete the entire 8-week program. Thus, participants are expected not to work nor enroll in classes during the program. The research objectives of the program are substantial and require full-time student commitment. At the end of the program, each participant is required to give an oral presentation and/or participate in a poster session, submit a minimum 15-page typewritten report and a one-page abstract describing his/her research. Each participant must attend all required seminars, lectures, informal faculty discussions and weekly student/staff meetings. As a condition of acceptance into the program, program participants will be asked after their departure to update information on their educational and career activities. This tracking is done solely to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. It is critical that we be able to conduct this long-term evaluation in order to maintain continuing funding for the programs. The information collected remains strictly confidential. This program is eight weeks, Sunday, June 22, 2008 to Saturday, August 16, 2008. All application materials and supporting documents must be received by January 18, 2008. Preference will be given to applications that are completed by the program's deadline. Notification of decisions on applications will be made beginning at the end of May 2008.
