Chancellor's Prize Program

The Chancellor's Prize is a supplementation award of up to $10,000 -- available in two options -- provided by the Graduate Division to augment a department's multi-year offer to highly recruited entering academic doctoral students. Chancellor's Prize recipients are the most highly recruited students admitted into the department.

Option 1: The Graduate Division provides a $5,000 stipend for 2007-2008 and a 2008 Chancellor's Prize Summer Mentorship award in the amount of $5,000.

Option 2: The Graduate Division provides a 2008 Chancellor's Prize Summer Mentorship award in the amount of $5,000 and a 2009 Chancellor's Prize Summer Mentorship award in the amount of $5,000.

Activation Procedures for Chancellor's Prize Summer Mentorship Award

Summer support is not automatically disbursed. Students and their departments are responsible for activating the award by following the procedures detailed below

Student's Responsibilities

To activate their summer support, Chancellor's Prize recipients must submit the following to their department by April 2, 2008:

  1. An Overview of the Summer Project (iPDF-228KB)
A brief (1-2 pages) proposal outlining the student's academic goals and plan of activities for the summer (e.g., conducting a research project leading to a master's paper or a required research paper; gaining familiarity in a research area by preparing a literature review; acquiring analytical, methodological, technical, or language skills in the student's field; preparing a paper for conference presentation; preparing for exams; and so forth).

  2. The Graduate Fellowships Letter of Recommendation Cover Form (iPDF-190KB)
plus a letter on departmental letterhead from the faculty member who will serve as the mentor, describing the mentor relationship and the activities or project the student will complete during the summer. If a mentoring relationship has already been established between applicant and faculty member, describe additional mentoring activities that would occur during this period. The recommendation must include the Cover Form.

Department's Responsibilities

View the Encumbrance database on the Graduate Division Intranet to see if your department has Chancellor's Prize recipients who are scheduled to activate their summer award.

By April 4, 2008 the department submits a copy of the student's Overview of the Summer Project (signed by the department chair) and Letter of Recommendation (including the cover form) to Liz Taylor in the Graduate Division Office of Outreach, Diversity, & Fellowships; 1252 Murphy Hall, 141901.

This is to ensure that the student's summer funding has been activated by the department.
