Doctoral Hooding Ceremony - Instructions for Graduates

Admission

If you respond that you will attend the ceremony, the Graduate Division will send you an admission card for yourself. Bring this card with you to the ceremony. It will serve as your admission to the ceremony and will be used to announce your name as you come forward to be hooded.

Attendance at the ceremony is by invitation only. You may invite up to a maximum of four guests for whom you must obtain tickets in advance. You do not need tickets for UCLA faculty, as they will be invited separately. Auditorium seating is limited. Please indicate in your response the number of tickets you need but do not ask for more than four or for more than you anticipate using.

Tickets will be issued by the Central Ticket Office (CTO), 310/825-2101. Tickets requested prior to Friday, May 27th will be sent by U.S. mail to U.S. addresses. After that date, and for addresses outside the U.S., tickets will be held for pick up at the Central Ticket Office. Once seating is completed and before the ceremony begins, any open seats will be made available through a ticket booth outside of Royce Hall.

Time and Place

Parking permits are $10 ($3 rate for guests parking with a disabled parking placard). The most convenient graduate parking is available in Structure 2, located at Hilgard and Westholme Avenues. From Structure 2 you should walk north to Royce Hall. (See map.) Graduates should plan to arrive at 5:00 P.M. to check in. After 6:00 P.M. your guests are welcome to park in Structure 5, on Royce Drive just off Sunset Boulevard.

Due to space limitations, your family members and friends may not accompany you to the reception and robing area in the West Lobby. However, the auditorium will open for seating at 6:30 P.M. for their convenience.

  • 5:00 P.M. Check-in of graduates & reception for graduates and faculty
  • 6:00 P.M. Robing of graduates and faculty
  • 6:30 P.M. Processional line-up
  • 6:50 P.M. Procession begins
  • 7:00 P.M. Ceremony begins

Expected duration of the ceremony is two hours.

If you are a student with a disability, or if you are inviting a guest who needs special assistance to attend this ceremony, please call the Office for Students with Disabilities at (310) 825-1501 (voice) or (310) 206-6083 (TDD) after May 1 to receive information about parking, access to venues and other disability-related assistance. You may also stop by the office at A255 Murphy for further information. Interpreters for the hearing-impaired will be provided.

Regalia - Cap, Gown, and Hood

You are responsible for renting your own cap, gown and hood and bringing them to the ceremony. Ordering is done online through the UCLA Store. If there are questions, please contact Graduation, Et Cetera (A Level of Ackerman Union, phone [310] 825-2587). Following the event, you may return your rented regalia to the collection tables outside Royce Hall. Caps, gowns and hoods may be kept if you are participating in a separate ceremony during commencement weekend. The absolute deadline for regalia returns without penalty to Graduation Etc is June 17, 2011 at 5:00 p.m.

Photography

You will be photographed by GradImages as you are being hooded during the ceremony and you may (if you wish) purchase photographs based on a proof that will be emailed and mailed to you. You will need to to provide a completed GradImages address card (the pink card sent with your tickets) at the check-in table. This year, GradImages is offering graduates a $5 discount on any photo order over $25 when graduates register their email address with them prior to graduation.

  • Camera tripods and strollers are not permitted in Royce Hall.
  • Graduates please do not bring valuables, purses, or backpacks to the ceremony; there is no place to store or secure them during the procession and ceremony.
  • Light appetizers will be served to graduates and faculty before the ceremony in the West Lobby of Royce Hall and light refreshments to everyone after the ceremony in Royce Quad.
