UCLA Graduate & Postdoctoral Extramural Support (GRAPES) Database - Introduction
The GRAPES database catalogs extramural funding opportunities of interest to prospective and current graduate students, students working on a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation, and postdoctoral scholars. It contains information on over 500 private and publicly funded awards, fellowships, and internships. Advanced search options allow users to refine their search by field, academic level, award type, award amount, and other criteria. GRAPES is maintained by the Fellowships and Financial Services Office.
Most funding organizations require that you contact them directly for detailed information and an application. When 1252 Murphy Hall appears in a listing, applications for it are available for pickup in the Fellowships and Financial Services Office. Sorry, we do not mail out application forms.
It is important that you contact funding sources as early as possible. Deadline dates are subject to change. Once you have confirmed the actual deadline date, begin the application process as early as possible. Some organizations require application materials, such as reference letters, that take time to prepare. Each organization also has its own schedule for reviewing and funding applications, and you may be required to apply many months before the funds are available.
Access the database through the GRAPES Search Form.
The GRAPES Search Form offers two search options. The "Simple Search" allows you to view a list of all awards in the database or enter part of a program name to select a specific award. The "Advanced Search" allows you to search for awards by dicsiplline, academic level, award type, and minimum award amount. You can also filter for travel abroad awards and exclude awards with certain eligibility criteria. Results can be sorted by deadline date or program name and they can be displayed as a hyperlink list or a full award detail list that is printer friendly.
The Graduate Division offers a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) 2.0 feed that headlines extramural funding opportunities, updated in GRAPES within the last 30 days, and links back to this website for complete information. You can find the RSS feed linked from the orange feed icon. Just copy the the feed's URL address to your news reader or click the "add to" Yahoo or Google icons if you are using their web-based readers.
UCLA campus-based awards are not listed in the GRAPES database. Prospective students should review Financial Support for Entering Graduate Students for information on university awards. Enrolled graduate students should look at Graduate Student Support for Continuing Students.
Community of Science (COS), Grant Forward (formerly Illinois Researcher Information Service IRIS), and Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN) databases contain thousands of federal and non-federal funding opportunities. COS, Grant Forward, and SPIN are services by subscription, and therefore only available to the UCLA community. Access is FREE for those using a UCLA public terminal or Bruin OnLine.
NASA's Student On-Line Application for Recruiting (SOLAR) system offers a comprehensive and searchable database of internships and fellowships at NASA facilities.
