Visiting Scholar and Visiting Graduate Researcher Health & Welfare Benefits

UCLA Health Insurance Plan

All visitors can enroll in the Visiting Scholar Injury and Sickness Insurance Plan, managed by Garnett-Powers & Associates. This UCLA-sponsored health insurance plan is specifically designed to meet the mandatory health insurance requirements listed below.

International Visiting Scholars and Visiting Graduate Researchers

All international visitors must provide proof of insurance that meets all the requirements within 31 days of their appointment start date at UCLA.

To enroll in the UCLA Health Insurance Plan:

  1. Complete the enrollment form.
  2. The insurance company will provide you with a confirmation email once your form is processed.
  3. Graduate Division will also be notified separately of your enrollment confirmation. Please do not forward any emails to UCLA Graduate Division.
  4. All enrollment questions should be directed to Garnett-Powers & Associates.

To opt out of the UCLA Health Insurance Plan:

  1. Complete the enrollment form.
  2. On the form, select #3c. "I wish to waive this coverage (decline coverage) for myself and my eligible dependents."
  3. On the form, select #7. "I am waiving."
  4. Email UCLAVSISP@garnett-powers.com or via FAX to 949-215-2275 your proof of comparable coverage. Please do not send insurance documents to UCLA Graduate Division.
  5. The insurance company will provide you with an email stating whether or not you have been approved to opt-out of coverage.
  6. If you have been approved to opt out of benefits, you will receive a waiver confirmation e-mail from the insurance company.
  7. Graduate Division will also be notified separately of your waiver confirmation. Please do not forward any emails to UCLA Graduate Division.
  8. All waiver approval questions should be directed to Garnett-Powers & Associates.

Domestic Visiting Scholars and Visiting Graduate Researchers

Domestic visitors already covered by a US health insurance policy may submit proof of policy benefits (insurance card or benefits summary) directly to the Graduate Division to satisfy the health insurance requirements. You can also purchase insurance through the UCLA Health Insurance Plan if you are not already covered.

Health Insurance Requirements

All Visiting Scholars and Visiting Graduate Researchers are required to show proof of health insurance with the following minimum coverage:

  1. $100,000 per accident or illness.
  2. An annual deductible not exceeding $250.
  3. $10,000 minimum coverage for expenses associated with the medical evacuation to the visitor’s home country. (international only)
  4. $7,500 minimum coverage for expenses associated with repatriation of remains to exchange visitor's home country. (international only)
  5. Pre-existing conditions must be covered after a 12-month waiting period.
  6. Coverage may include a provision for maximum 25% coinsurance or co-payment paid by the visitor. Coinsurance must allow for customary & reasonable charges in US dollars, not equivalent cost for services in home country.
  7. Coverage cannot exclude benefits for perils inherent to the activities of the program in which the visitor participates.
  8. Policy must be underwritten by an insurance corporation meeting the US Department of State rating requirements or backed by the full faith and credit of the visitor's home country government, designated sponsor, or exchange visitor's employee group plan.

This requirement also applies to all accompanying J-2 dependents (spouses and/or children). The health insurance must be in effect for the entire duration of the stay in the United States.
