In 1969 the Institute of American Cultures (IAC) was founded as a collaborative initiative to foster and advance ethnic studies scholarship at UCLA and to build connections among the four centers: the American Indian Studies Center, the Asian American Studies Center, the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, and the Chicano Studies Research Center. Since its inception, the IAC has continued to enhance graduate studies and to support interdisciplinary research and training in ethnic studies. It also serves as a forum for intercultural scholarly exchange while promoting diversity in student and faculty outreach and recruitment to UCLA. Although the IAC conducts no research itself, it makes funds available annually through its postdoctoral and graduate fellows programs and research grants. These awards have resulted in the publication of scores of books, monographs, and articles as well as the completion of numerous dissertations, master’s theses, and MFA film projects, and contribute significantly to the fund of new knowledge about America’s underrepresented populations. IAC Winter Forum & Reception Fellowships & Grants IAC visiting scholar/researcher and graduate/predoctoral fellowships are competitive awards that support scholarship on African Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans, and Chicanas/os. The acceptance of a fellowship carries with it a commitment to contribute to the research activities of the sponsoring ethnic studies research center and, in some cases, to teach a 10-week seminar based on the fellow's research.
