UCLA Institute of American Cultures

Graduate and Predoctoral Fellowship in Ethnic Studies

ruler line

Current UCLA students with a demonstrated interest in ethnic studies are eligible to apply for graduate/predoctoral fellowships to aid in completion of a thesis or dissertation. We especially encourage applications that advance our understanding of new social and cultural realities occasioned by the dramatic population shifts of recent decades, including greater heterogeneity within ethnic groups and increased interethnic contact. The fellowship consists of a $18,500 maximum stipend and all in-state fees. Restrictions apply regarding acceptance of supplemental employment and/or other awards during the fellowship year. On occasion, Centers have chosen to divide the graduate fellowship between two or among three students.

Awards are for one academic year.

Unfortunately, the Chicano Studies Research Center and the American Indian Studies Center will not be awarding a 2012-13 Graduate/Predoctoral Fellowship due to budget constraints. Please consider us in the following 2013-14 academic year or near future.

Eligibility

Open to students with a demonstrated interest in African American, American Indian, Asian American, or Chicana/o studies. Application for the fellowship in African American Studies is open only to doctoral students who will have advanced to candidacy by the beginning of the fellowship year.

Deadline

Applications are available in October, due by February 1, 2012 and recipients are notified by mid-April.

Application Form

The first step in applying for IAC research support in ethnic studies is to contact the Ethnic Studies Research Center that you are interested in applying to. Due to budget constraints for the 2012-2013 academic year, it will vary from Center to Center as to the types of fellowships or research grants that they will offer so we strongly encourage that you contact the Center’s IAC Coordinator first. Once you have discussed your project with the Center’s IAC Coordinator, please complete the application form.

Applications and supplementary materials will be accepted via email as a PDF attachment or via mail to the IAC Coordinator at the Ethnic Studies Research Center most appropriate to the area of research.
